Unexpected Grilling Ideas for Labor Day and Beyond

Keep your grill going well past Labor Day with these grilled dishes.

Labor Day signifies the beginning of the end of summer, and nothing is more synonymous with summer than grilling. While it’s possible we still have several weeks of grilling weather left, the long holiday weekend is the perfect excuse to get your friends together and fire up the grill. This year pull more than burgers, dogs, and brats off your grill and surprise your party guests with one of these unexpected grilled items.

Pizza

Pizza is the perfect party food. It’s easy to customize, quick to make, and everyone loves melted cheese. This year skip the delivery and add a Labor Day twist by grilling your pie. It’s easier than you may think! If you’re feeling especially chef-like you can make your own dough, but feel free to make it easy on yourself and buy pre-made dough from your local grocery store or see if you can buy a round or two from a local pizzeria. You don’t need any fancy equipment to grill your pizza, but if you have a pizza stone make sure to preheat it along with the grill. If you want the impressive grill marks on the dough you’ll want to cook it directly on the grill grates rather than on a pizza stone. Depending on the feel of your party and how much you want to impress your guests you can keep the toppings simple with just cheese, pepperoni, or sausage, or you can go all out like this Grilled Cherry Goat Cheese Arugula Pizza.

Tofu

While the thought of a “meat alternative” or “vegetarian-friendly” main course may not be the most appealing to those of us who regularly eat meat, don’t sleep on this soy-based protein. Because it’s low in calories and a great source of all eight amino acids as well as iron and calcium it’s easy to see why it’s been popular in the fitness community since the 80’s, but with its versatility and ability to take on any flavor profile it’s also a favorite among veggie-friendly chefs. The “firm” or “extra firm” variety is perfectly suited for grilling, and depending on the marinade you use even the most carnivorous of dinner guests will be surprised at how much they like tofu. For an Asian flair try this Grilled Tofu Skewers With Spicy Peanut Sauce, or go with whatever cuisine flavors you’re feeling at the moment.

Quesadilla

Quesadillas are arguably one of the most underrated dishes, with their quick cooking time, versatility, and minimal ingredients you can whip up a delicious appetizer or main dish in under 10 minutes. The delicious crunchy outside and creamy, melty, cheesy inside are satisfying enough to trick your taste buds into thinking it took much longer to put it together, and if you really want to impress just add a few more ingredients and minimal prep time. Add another dimension of flavor to your quesadillas by grilling the filling first, then finishing the quesadillas on the grill as well. Use whatever meats and vegetables you have on hand, or keep the southwest feel with these Grilled Chipotle Chicken Quesadillas.

Fruit

Don’t let savory foods have all the fun! With the natural sugar content fruit is perfect for cooking on a high, direct heat like a grill. The caramelization paired with the smoky, umami flavor that comes from a grill is an excellent addition to any dessert or sweet side dish. Understandably so, some fruits work better than others for grilling like watermelon, pineapple, stone fruit, or other firmer fruits. Also you’ll want to keep the pieces cut into larger chunks, spear, or wedges to prevent them from falling through the grill grates. Think even farther outside the box and fire up the grill early in the morning to add something extra to your breakfast with this Grilled Pink Grapefruit paired with eggs, toast, and your favorite breakfast meat.

Meatloaf

Meatloaf isn’t the most appetizingly named dish, and it tends to have a bad rap since it can easily be bland, dry, or worse. But if it’s done well, meatloaf can be the hearty dish perfect to feed anyone who loves the traditional “meat and potatoes” dinner. Meatloaf is also typically a fall or winter dish, since it can be a bit heavy and cooks for a while in the oven, but with a little out-of-the-box thinking can change the way you think about this traditional dish. Elevate a good meatloaf recipe and bring it to a summer dinner party by adding charred and smoky elements by cooking it on a grill like this Grilled Meatloaf recipe. Pair with grilled veggies, corn, or potatoes to keep the true Midwest cuisine feel.
